Burr Oak -- A man simply wanted to gather some sweet corn for the family freezer. He didn't expect to have to deal with a 34-inch alligator rushing at him.

Jeff Adamski of St. Joseph County was in a corn field near the Michigan-Indiana border when two women came running from a few rows over, screaming that they had seen an alligator.

Adamski tells the Sturgis Journal he "backed away" and the gator "darted at me." He then backed up faster, and the animal kept coming.

That's when Adamski decided to deal with the problem, considering what an alligator could do to a child if he let it go. He grabbed a 4-foot bar out of his truck and killed the alligator.

Adamski is from Burr Oak, about 80 miles south of Grand Rapids.

Warner Bros. TV has green-lit a series based on the Vertigo comic Sandman, a very ambitious project.

Sandman focuses on the character of Dream and his brothers and sisters known as The Endless; Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Destiny.

Dream, also known as Morpheus or The Master (or Lord) of Dreams, is an immortal billions of years old who was captured using a spell and held prisoner for 70 years. After his escape he finds his domain in disrepair and sets about setting things right. At first he's a very egotistical and harsh character, but over the span of the series he changes in many ways.

A rather good read. Should be an interesting series done right, and it'll have a good shot as the producers of Supernatural look to be getting the job.
Schools ban bracelets promoting cancer awareness

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Cancer has ravaged several of Ann Aberson's relatives, so she doesn't have a problem with her two teenage daughters wearing bracelets to raise awareness of breast cancer.

But their school principal does.

This week, Baltic High School, just north of here, became one of the latest across the USA to ban the rubber bracelets that has a message some say is in poor taste: "I love boobies."

The bracelets have caused controversy in schools in states including California, Colorado, Idaho, Florida and Wisconsin. Some districts allow students to wear them inside-out, and others ban them.

"When we had an assembly the first day of school, I basically told the students we are not insensitive to the cause," Baltic High Principal Jim Aisenbrey says. "I think everybody in the gym, including myself, has had a family member or relative or friend who has dealt with the issue. I do think there are more proper ways to bring this plight to the attention of people, and I don't think this is a proper way."

"I guess I never thought of them as offensive," Aberson says. Her grandmother and five of her grandmother's sisters battled breast cancer.

The bracelets, which sell for about $4 in stores, were created by Keep A Breast Foundation, a Carlsbad, Calif., non-profit group that seeks to increase breast cancer awareness among young people. Proceeds from sales support the foundation's programs, founder Shaney Jo Darden says. She says the bracelets are meant to spark discussions.

As one example amongst many, I cite this BBC report on the criticisms levelled against the IPCC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-11131897

I deliberately place this in this forum because this report is neither scientific nor political, at least in terms of specific politics.

I very much welcome the majority of what has been reported in the media, such as the one that I cite. I assume that this will be implemented fairly rapidly. However, I emphasise that this will never remove all risk of error. It is probable that the Himalaya Glacier error would have got through even if these measures had been implemented long before 2007. In addition of course, it would never have stopped the East Anglia University debacle, which was a stupid storm in a teacup with the object of buggering up the Copenhagen conference.

The big advantage that I foresee is that the contrarians will be able to have their say in the future, much as Pittock has done in his book. As has been made quite clear in this report, the great majority of the IPCC work has been done correctly and it is scientifically valid. What has been omitted has been specific rebuttal, either pro or con, of any points of view; this will hopefully now be corrected in future reports.

For me, what is evident is that the IPCC needs new leadership. I find it regretful if the status quo is maintained for longer than is necessary, especially in view of the specific criticisms raised against the chairman. I have worked on international committees concerning the environment, and I know the problem of individuals who try to pose too much influence, often from vested interests. On more than one occasion, I have made myself very unpopular by fighting tooth and nail against such problems. Although I have worked with some members of the IPCC, I have never been a member myself because my retirement was too imminent. Unfortunately, there is always a risk of "cult of the personality" amongst the leaders and this has become increasingly evident over recent years.

Hopefully, the fifth report of the IPCC will be somewhat less dogmatic. If this be so, then the naysayers and other contrarians will have their say, although I anticipate that it would make very little difference to the scientific findings. On the whole, these have been well-established in the fourth report, warts and all. This has been made very clear in this latest document (which I have not read, having perused only a number of media reports).

I hope that the pendulum does not swing too far in the opposite direction. It would be catastrophic if no conclusion could be drawn whatsoever because the report would contain inconclusive controversy. Time will tell!

Wired youth forget how to write in China and Japan

Like every Chinese child, Li Hanwei spent her schooldays memorising thousands of the intricate characters that make up the Chinese writing system.

Yet aged just 21 and now a university student in Hong Kong, Li already finds that when she picks up a pen to write, the characters for words as simple as "embarrassed" have slipped from her mind.

"I can remember the shape, but I can't remember the strokes that you need to write it," she says. "It's a bit of a problem."

Surveys indicate the phenomenon, dubbed "character amnesia", is widespread across China, causing young Chinese to fear for the future of their ancient writing system.

Young Japanese people also report the problem, which is caused by the constant use of computers and mobile phones with alphabet-based input systems.

There is even a Chinese word for it: "tibiwangzi", or "take pen, forget character".

A poll commissioned by the China Youth Daily in April found that 83 percent of the 2,072 respondents admitted having problems writing characters.
Ninth Circuit Court Rules in Favor of Warrantless GPS Tracking

Federal agents can now enter your property without warrant and track you in nine western states

Most would consider the Constitution is one of the finest achievements by the U.S. people and has viewed as a paradigm internationally. However, in an age of technological revolution, members of U.S. local, state, and national level -- on both sides of the aisle -- are increasingly viewing some of the Constitution's guaranteed rights as inappropriate or at least subject to review.

Among them is the Fourth Amendment, part of the original Bill of Rights. It states:

Quote:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

While some developments such warrantless wiretaps or police arrests of people who photograph them have ruffled feathers in the past, a new legal precedent is raising more than a few eyebrows.

Under the laws of California and eight other Western states, state, local, or federal agents can sneak onto your property without a warrant, plant a GPS tracking device on your vehicle and monitor your movements 24-7 -- without a warrant.

The ruling has already been upheld at the federal level via a U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit decision.
>
