We have a new file server, server2, we want to re-map their drives to.
The problem is that there are a lot of shared documents, spreadsheets passed around etc, and scanning going on all the time. So going through the office from user to user re-mapping drives while people are working is pretty much out of the question.

Come to think of it, it's not just mapped drives, there are shortcuts too. sigh...

Would a regedit search and replace "\\server1\share" with "\\server2\share" work?
That would be off hours and then turn off the share on server1 to catch anything that got missed.

Is there a better way of doing this?

Yesterday a colleague took a bunch of video at our local Children's Hosptial (we are trying to raise money towards a new dual operating theatre).

Before going we did a test with our Sanyo HD2000 and a lapel mic. This worked ok but was a bit quiet. So she found the setting for 'external mic volume' and upped it from 3 to 4 out of 5. Sadly we didn't do another test and after filming she found the sound to be distorted.

What's a good approach to cleaning it up, if any?

I have available CS5 Master Suite (but my 64-bit Windows 7 box is playing up so I have to fix that first) and Pinnacle Studio 12 (will need reinstalling as the HDD it is on was last used on older hardware).

Thanks,
Many were sad to see Microsoft ditch the Windows 7 Family Pack right in the middle of the 2009 holiday shopping season. Well, Windows fans can rejoice because Microsoft has brought back Family Pack to celebrate Windows 7's one-year anniversary.

As many of you already know, Windows 7 Family Pack gives you three licensed upgrades of Windows 7 Home Premium for just $149.99 instead of $119.99 for each license. According to Microsoft's Ashely Brown, Family Pack will be available from the Microsoft Store and authorized retailers beginning on October 3 in the United States.

Those outside of the U.S. (Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia) will have to wait until October 22 to get the Family Pack.

Unfortunately, just like before, the availability of the Windows 7 Family Pack won't be a long-term offering -- Microsoft says that the offer is "while supplies last".

Let's see RAMBUS try to patent this :p

As students we all learned the 3 basic components: resistor, capacitor and inductor. In the 1970's the theoretical basis for a fourth arose, the memristor, but it wasn't actually demonstrated until 2008.

Today HP announced they are teaming with Korea's Hynix to produce ReRAM, a non-volatile memory device based on the memristor. Memristors are very interesting, and fast, little devils that work more like our brains synapses than conventional memory.

Advantages: stores much more using far less energy, doesn't lose charge, is stackable and is extremely radiation resistant. What's not to like? This is going to make for enormous memory cards in all applications, plus being radiation hard will get rid of one major worry from ionizing radiation. Lots of space based applications too.

HP says 3-5 years.
The company's Radeon and FirePro brands will remain, but they'll be transitioned to the AMD brand when the next-generation Radeon GPUs appear later this year.
Viking Modular introduces an SSD in a DIMM memory form factor

Viking Modular has unveiled a novel approach to adding a solid state storage boost to a computer or server. Instead of being bound by the familiar 2.5 or 3.5-inch form factor, the company has introduced SATADIMM – storage on a memory module. It's shaped like system RAM and slides into DDR3 slots on the motherboard but connecting up its onboard SATA interface results in up to 200GB Enterprise Class Solid State Drive storage being made available. Although likely to find its way into business systems and data center servers in the immediate future, system designers may well find the module useful for creating even thinner mobile devices, such as tablet computers.

The SATADIMM storage solution sees an Enterprise Class Solid State Drive placed on a system memory module. In fact the drive comes in an industry-standard JEDEC 240-pin DDR3 DIMM form factor which will fit into any spare memory slots on a mainboard to provide a novel storage boost. The power needs of the drive are met by the 1.5V supply to the slot and in order to take advantage of the SATADIMM solution, the module will need to be connected up to a SATA II interface upon insertion.
H.264 answers Google's open codec with forever free license

MPEG-LA — the organization that oversees the H.264 video codec on behalf of patent holders such as Apple and Microsoft — has made its latest move in what's shaping up to be an intriguing chess game with the likes of Google, Mozilla, and Opera.

On Thursday, the patent pool organization announced that for the H.264 license used by free web video, it will continue to waive royalty fees through the entire life of the license. Previously, MPEG-LA said it would waive royalties for licensees only until December 31, 2015.

This means that if you use H.264 solely for free web video, you will never have to pay a fee to the MPEG-LA. It does not rule out the possibility, however, that some other patent holder outside the MPEG-LA will come calling.

The move is an apparent response to Google's WebM web-media format, which was open sourced in May under its a royalty-free license. At the heart of WebM is the VP8 video codec Google that acquired when it purchased video compression outfit On2 Technologies in a deal valued at $124.6 million. Google's aim was to create a completely royalty-free alternative to H.264 for use with the fledgling HTML5 video tag, and the new WebM format was promptly embraced by Opera and Mozilla.

Prior to the introduction of WebM, Opera and Mozilla backed the open source Ogg Theora codec — an inferior technology to VP8 — declining to put a royalty-encumbered codec into their browsers. Originally, MPEG-LA's H.264 license for free web video waived royalties until January 1, 2011. But in what seemed to be a response to Mozilla and Opera, the organization expanded its royalty-free period through 2015. For Mozilla and others, the worry was still that the MPEG-LA would lock developers into the license while it was free and then begin charging for use.

Now the MPEG-LA has lifted royalties from the license entirely, but it will continue to charge when H.264 is used for products and services other than free video broadcast, including applications that encode and decode video. Google, Mozilla, and Opera are sure to push ahead with WebM. The three outfits did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Dish Network subscribers, get ready to join the 21st century. Your content provider of choice is said to be peeling the "beta" stickers from its DishOnline.com service this week, opening up online and on-demand streaming of content to its subscribers. At least 15 channels will be streaming live over the internets, including all the major networks and extras like Syfy and Comedy Central, though selection appears to be somewhat limited at this time. The site will also provide remote DVR scheduling and let SlingLoaded users stream recorded content straight from their device -- which, of course, they could already do. The service goes live sometime within the next few days, and of course will only be available to Dish subscribers, you lucky people you.

The usual 'fix' is to change your Google prefs to use the Elmer Fudd language or click the icon at the bottom of the page to show the 'old' display, but the former leaves you with gibberish and the latter only works for that search - you have to do it every time. Frustrating either way.

If you use FireFox there is a fix for most of this.

1) install the GreaseMonkey scripting interface add-on

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748/

2) install the Google Image Basic and Google Image - direct link scripts.

http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/82140

http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/65066

Most images you select will view in a pop up, but if you select the link in the text info it'll go to a new tab.

 A New Kind of Microchip

A probability-based processor may speed up flash memory, and eventually much more.

A computer chip that performs calculations using probabilities, instead of binary logic, could accelerate everything from online banking systems to the flash memory in smart phones and other gadgets.

Rewriting some fundamental features of computer chips, Lyric Semiconductor has unveiled its first "probability processor," a silicon chip that computes with electrical signals that represent chances, not digital 1s and 0s.
>
The electrical signals inside Lyric's chips represent probabilities, instead of 1s and 0s. While the transistors of conventional chips are arranged into components called digital NAND gates, which can be used to implement all possible digital logic functions, those in a probability processor make building blocks known as Bayesian NAND gates. Bayesian probability is a field of mathematics named after the eighteenth century English statistician Thomas Bayes, who developed the early ideas on which it is based.

Whereas a conventional NAND gate outputs a "1" if neither of its inputs match, the output of a Bayesian NAND gate represents the odds that the two input probabilities match. This makes it possible to perform calculations that use probabilities as their input and output.
